|A quick update this week on under-harbour tunnelling
Photo below- the rear of tunnel boring machine Kathleen.
The above photo shows the very rear gantry of tunnel boring machine (TBM) Kathleen on the final approach to Blues Point. Gantries provide the necessary services, such as power, ventilation and hydraulics for TBM operations. The hallway-like design of gantries allow a passage through the middle to deliver pre-cast concrete segments to the front of the machine, where they are installed to line the tunnels immediately after excavation. TBM Kathleen is over 130 metres long and consists of 10 gantries.
TBM Kathleen has built over 850 metres of the second under-harbour metro tunnel and is expected to arrive at Blues Point in the coming weeks.
Out-of-hours work next week at Barangaroo Station
Work will continue 24/7 to pour concrete for the underground crossover cavern, disassemble TBM pieces, manage excavated tunnelling material by the foreshore and operate under-harbour tunnelling support plants. The work involves the use of hand tools, concrete trucks, loaders, pumps and cranes. This work is not expected to cause high noise at nearby properties.
Have a good weekend.
